Jawai's terrain is open granite and thorny scrub, its jeeps are open-sided, and its drives run at dawn and dusk when the temperature can swing by fifteen or twenty degrees from the middle of the day. None of that is exotic to pack for, but it does mean the usual safari list needs a few Jawai-specific adjustments.
Clothing for dust and temperature swings
Layer everything. Even in the hotter months, dawn drives start cold enough for a fleece or light jacket that you'll be glad to shed within the hour. Stick to neutral, muted colours — khaki, olive, stone — rather than bright or white clothing, which stands out against the grey-brown rock and can spook wildlife at close range. A cotton scarf or buff earns its keep on every drive; the tracks are dusty and jeeps kick up plenty of it, especially in the dry season.
Sun and skin
Granite reflects heat and glare in a way forest cover doesn't, so the sun exposure here is sharper than it looks. Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat or cap that won't blow off in an open jeep, and polarised sunglasses are non-negotiable. Lip balm with SPF is worth the small bag space — the combination of dry air and wind off the open landscape dries skin out fast.
Gear for the open jeep
Binoculars matter as much as a camera here, given how much of Jawai's appeal is the birdlife around the dam alongside the leopards. Bring a zoom lens if photography matters to you, and a dust cover or simple plastic bag for gear between stops — camera bodies do not love this terrain. Charging can be limited at remote camps running on generator power, so carry a powerbank and charge devices whenever electricity is available rather than assuming it will be.
Small essentials
A refillable water bottle, basic insect repellent for dawn and dusk, a few local currency notes for small purchases along the way, and a compact first-aid kit round out the list. Our advice: pack light. Jawai's jeeps are small, seating is close, and a lean bag is easier to manage than a full suitcase's worth of gear across a two-drive-a-day schedule.
