Ranthambore permits are not something you sort out on arrival. They're booked in advance, allocated to a named zone, and fixed to a specific gypsy or canter — so understanding the process before you land in Sawai Madhopur saves a lot of frustration.
The booking window
Permits open roughly 90 days ahead of the safari date and are released online, session by session. Popular windows — winter weekends, the days around Diwali, and school holiday periods — can sell out within hours of release. Our advice: if your travel dates are fixed and it's peak season, set a reminder for the exact day your slot opens and book the moment it goes live.
Gypsy or canter
You have two vehicle options. The gypsy is a 6-seater open jeep — the better choice if you want flexibility, a lower vantage point, and a guide's fuller attention. The canter is a larger 20-seater open bus, cheaper per head and easier to book last-minute, but noisier and slower to reposition when something interesting happens. If sightings are your priority over budget, choose the gypsy.
What you need to book and to travel
Booking requires ID details for every person on the permit — Indian nationals need a government-issued ID, foreign nationals need passport details. Crucially, you must carry the exact same ID at the gate that was used during booking; mismatches can mean being turned away. Build in time before your slot to collect your permit and clear the gate, since both drives leave promptly.
Morning or evening, and which zone
Morning and evening drives are booked as separate sessions, each roughly three to three and a half hours depending on the season. Your zone is assigned at the time of booking and cannot be changed on the day — so decide in advance whether you're chasing the lake zones' scenery or the quieter, drier zones toward Kundal and Aantri. Our advice for a first-timer: book at least two drives across two different zones. One sighting-heavy morning tells you very little about what the park is actually like.
